Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer: Beyond Editing Styles

Chances are, you may have not thought about this yet! Naturally, brides look for a photographer with their ideal editing style (light & airy, dark & moody, or true to color for example!)

Besides liking how your photos look, have you thought about what else you want in a wedding photographer?

What do I mean? For example, what kind of shots you want to remember your day? I'm not talking about the shot list you're stressing over; making sure you didn't forget your Great Aunt Helen, either! Have you ever considered which detail shots you'd love to keep forever? How about some candid moments in your album? And let's not forget the catered food! What about capturing your Great Grandma's necklace next to your perfume in the bridal suite? Bet you hadn't thought of those!

The great news is, if you get the right photographer, you won't have to worry about it!

Why? Because it's in our nature to catch all those details and more. It's literally my job to spot the little things you might miss. You're not just paying someone to snap pictures and wrangle the wedding party. You're hiring a creative artist who's going to give you everything you wanted and then some. Not all photographers are created equal, and every artist have a different vision! So it's important to understand their vision and style before you book!

Most brides spend so much time planning every last detail of their wedding day, and all of that thought and effort deserves to be captured for you to remember! My mission is to give you a gallery that relives your entire day and all the little details, not just fill your gallery with posed shots!

Besides checking off your shot list, I make sure to grab candid moments, detail shots, and lots of fun, prompt-based portraits so your wedding photos feel lively and engaging.

I want you to feel the love, remember the laughs and tear up every time you look at your wedding photos!

I am not saying pick me to be your photographer, no matter what!

Truth is, some professionals and some people are just not a good fit for each other and I want both of us to be happy and have a good experience! What I'm saying is, think outside the box when you are on the hunt for your photographer!

Even if you feel like someone else is a better fit - I still want you to have the best day possible! During consults I tell every bride, even if you don't book with me, take the time to ask yourself these important questions:

  • Do you like their personality? You will spend a ton of time with this person, and how they make you feel will directly affect the energy of the day and your photos! My biggest advice I give to any bride is to hire someone who is fun! It's the easiest way to bring out your authentic smiles, laughs and make the day enjoyable! You can have beautiful photos and a beautiful experience! You should never have to pick between the two! Also being kindly assertive is so important as a wedding photographer. Nobody wants to pay to get yelled at but you also need someone who can take control of the situation and keep it running as smoothly as possible.

  • What is their turn around time? Will you be waiting four weeks or four months for your photos?

I had to wait FIVE months for mine and it is not the experience I want my brides to have! My typical turn around time is around a month, but everyone is different! Make sure you ask beforehand and know what to expect!

  • What is included in your package? Do you get digital downloads, print release, or only physical copies? Do you have to purchase your items after or are they included? Every photographer does it differently, so make sure you know what to expect ahead of time!

A wedding photo album open on a table shows a couple embracing and smiling, with a background of green foliage. The table is checkered.

  • Does your photographer have a second shooter on their team? Adding a second shooter to my weddings was a game changer and I recommend every bride to have two if they are able! The amount of memories you are able to document when you have two sets of artistic eyes watching is unbelievable! I'm lucky to not only do what I love, but I get to do it with who I love too!

My best friend Kayla shoots all my weddings with me and is such a great addition to my business! She is incredibly talented, fun to be around, professional and can make a friend with anyone! I couldn't ask for a better second shooter!

  • Is your photographer a team player? Is he or she going to work with your other vendors to help keep your day running smoothly? I can't tell you how many bad experiences I've had with vendors who didn't have a team mindset, and how much of a difference it makes when all the vendors support and work together! You need and deserve a team player!
